Cognitive skills are essential tools of effective learning which enable us to successfully think, prioritize, plan, understand, visualize, remember, create useful associations, and solve problems. If cognitive skills are developed, the development of knowledge and problem-solving abilities and the child’s capacity to understand the world around them and figure things out by themselves take place. These fundamental skills enable children to process sensory information and learn new things.

On one hand, cognitive skills development depends to a certain extent on the genetic makeup of the child while on the other hand, it is largely dependent on their learning in the early years. A child’s thinking and learning skills can be improved with practice and the right training.
Examples of cognitive skills are:
- Attention
- Memory
- Processing Speed
- Comprehension
- Visual Perception
- Logical Reasoning
- Auditory Processing
If one or more of these skills are weak, learning becomes a struggle for the child throughout their early years. But, if the weak cognitive skills are developed and trained, learning becomes easier, faster, and more effective for the child.
